Anesthesia care team

Full details

This role centers on selecting and giving intravenous, spinal, and other anesthetics before and during surgical or medical procedures, working as part of an anesthesia care team and following the employer's policies. The nurse anesthetist watches patient responses and vital signs both during and after anesthesia, steps in with corrective measures when needed, files a postoperative report on each patient's condition, and keeps records of every anesthetic given.

Duties also extend beyond the operating room to procedures such as intubation and arterial line placement, which are performed only within established competencies and under a physician's order. Before surgery, deliveries, or other medical procedures, the nurse anesthetist evaluates patients, reviews charts including permits, pre-operative medications, lab results, and items like hearing aids, dentures, contact lenses, or prostheses, and consults with anesthesiologists and surgeons. Airway difficulties are assessed, and every pre-anesthesia evaluation must be documented thoroughly.

The position involves explaining tests, procedures, and disease processes to patients and families, including the major anesthetic risks, and recording that those discussions took place. The nurse anesthetist builds each patient's care plan, reviews it with the supervising physician, starts IV lines, selects drugs suited to the patient's safety, surgical needs, and history, and mixes solutions to the required concentrations. Handoffs to post-anesthesia care unit staff are made through a safety-focused exchange, and the nurse anesthetist informs the anesthesiologist or surgeon of any significant change, including emergency steps such as infant resuscitation.

The employer notes that it reviews compensation for positions routinely and may revise job descriptions or change a position's pay status, generally after notifying affected employees.
