Full details
The UAB Division of Community Anesthesia, which pairs anesthesiologists with CRNAs to serve several UAB St. Vincent's facilities, is seeking a Lead CRNA at the Birmingham campus near downtown. The division brings an academic approach to care into community hospitals, and its CRNAs work with considerable independence alongside anesthesiologists and surgeons. Scheduling is described as flexible. The surgical mix is broad, spanning a sports medicine orthopaedic practice, obstetrics, cardiac, neuro, vascular, and general surgery, and the division covers more than 50,000 procedures a year across 53 operating rooms and suites, with 15 anesthesiologists and over 70 CRNAs on the team.
In this lead role, the CRNA coordinates anesthesia delivery under an anesthesiologist's direction for varied surgical and diagnostic procedures, as well as cardiothoracic operations and cardiac catheterizations. Responsibilities include preoperative evaluation and risk assessment, administering anesthesia across surgical, obstetric, therapeutic, and diagnostic cases, managing invasive monitoring, IV access, and airway needs, and handling pre- and post-anesthesia evaluations with plan explanations, consent, and follow-up on complications. The lead also runs daily operations, sets staffing coverage, assigns workloads, contributes to staff evaluations, and mentors allied health personnel and student nurse anesthetists, while serving as a clinical resource and taking on other assigned duties.
Candidates need a degree from an accredited nurse anesthesia program and two years of related experience; work experience cannot replace the education requirement. Required credentials include Alabama APN certification with the CRNA specialty, along with ACLS, BLS through the American Heart Association, and PALS through the American Heart Association.
Benefits described for eligible roles include educational assistance, generous time off, employee assistance and wellness offerings, paid family leave for new parents, and qualifying employer status for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program. UAB Medicine, the state's largest health system, operates a range of academic and community sites and presents the position as a path to growth within a mission-driven organization.
