Full details
This CRNA role is a licensed nursing position with advanced anesthesia training, centered on giving, watching over, and adjusting anesthetic doses for patients of every age during surgeries and other procedures. The position is offered only at select sites, chosen because of their particular workplace conditions.
Responsibilities begin before surgery, with reviewing the anesthesiologist's pre-anesthetic evaluation and lab results, discussing the planned operation with the patient, and confirming the patient's condition, airway-related items, and fasting status. The CRNA checks that all safety requirements are satisfied and that equipment such as the anesthesia machine, suction, airway tools, and monitoring and electrosurgical electrodes is ready before induction.
During the case, the CRNA induces and maintains general anesthesia and performs regional techniques, selecting drugs and methods according to departmental guidelines and the staff anesthesiologist's direction. Intubation and extubation are performed with constant attention to patient protection, and emergencies are handled under departmental policy. Noninvasive monitoring is applied to general anesthesia patients, vital signs are charted at set intervals, and fluid, blood, and electrolyte balance is managed. Significant events, including tourniquet details, site changes, and surgeon-administered injections, must be documented, and any adverse drug reaction is treated while the senior staff anesthesiologist is contacted without delay.
At the end of the procedure, the CRNA reverses the anesthetic, brings the patient safely to recovery, and gives a thorough handoff to recovery staff, reporting any complications to the recovery anesthesiologist and assigned staff anesthesiologist. The CRNA also follows patients for up to 24 hours after anesthesia to identify anesthesia-related problems and records each visit in a progress note.
Successful candidates complete 40 continuing education units every two years, keep certification and registration current, stay informed about evolving practice, and maintain current cardiopulmonary resuscitation knowledge. The role calls for flexibility with variable hours and shared on-call duty with timely response, as well as clear communication and teamwork within the anesthesia care group. The posting lists a bachelor's degree, less than one year of experience, CRNA credentialing, and ACLS and BLS certification, both to be completed within 30 days of hire or transfer.
