Full details

This per diem role at the Downey site places a Graduate Registered Nurse Anesthetist under the medical supervision of an anesthesiologist. The practitioner delivers general and regional anesthesia for surgical, obstetric and other procedures requiring anesthesia, caring for patients from neonates through geriatric age groups, in line with hospital and departmental standards.

Responsibilities include managing the airway, maintaining fluid balance and homeostasis, monitoring patients, responding to airway emergencies and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and managing ventilated patients. Before surgery, the practitioner interviews and examines patients, reviews their charts, and selects an anesthetic with the physician. After procedures, the practitioner assesses patients within 24 hours and takes action to keep them stable.

Daily and between-case checks of anesthesia equipment, drug preparation, and careful accounting of controlled substances are part of the work, along with equipment and supply upkeep. Anesthesia is given within the practitioner's delineated privileges and any imposed conditions. Compliance with accreditation standards, state regulations and organizational policies is expected, as are courteous working relationships with patients, staff and the public.

The role operates within an anesthesia team that includes physicians, other anesthesia providers and anesthesia technicians, and the practitioner may take on other duties within the scope of their license and certification.
