Full details

Working under the medical supervision of an anesthesiologist, the CRNA provides general and regional anesthesia for surgical, obstetrical and other procedures requiring anesthesia care. Patients served span every age group, from neonates and children through adolescents, adults and older adults, and care follows hospital and departmental standards.

Responsibilities include airway management, fluid and hemodynamic balance, patient monitoring, emergency response including airway and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and care of patients on ventilators. Before surgery, the CRNA interviews and examines each patient, reviews the chart, and chooses an anesthetic with the anesthesiologist. During and after procedures, the CRNA watches the patient closely, takes action to keep them stable, and evaluates them within 24 hours postoperatively.

The role also involves daily and between-case checks of anesthesia equipment, drug preparation, careful accounting of controlled substances, and upkeep of equipment and supplies. The CRNA communicates with surgeons and anesthesiologists about patient concerns, precepts student nurse anesthetists, and works within delineated clinical privileges. All work must follow Kaiser Permanente policies, accreditation and state regulations, and the CRNA is expected to act courteously with patients, staff and the public. Other duties within licensure may be assigned.
