Full details

Working under the medical supervision of an anesthesiologist, the CRNA provides general and regional anesthesia for surgical, obstetrical and other procedures requiring anesthesia care. Patients span every age group, from neonates and children through adolescents, adults and older adults, and care follows hospital and departmental standards. Duties include airway management, fluid and homeostasis maintenance, patient monitoring, emergency response involving the airway and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and management of ventilated patients.

Core responsibilities include pre-operative evaluation through patient interview, examination and chart review, and choosing an anesthetic plan with the anesthesiologist. The CRNA administers anesthesia within delineated clinical privileges, monitors patients during surgery, responds to changes in operative condition, and assesses patients again within 24 hours after the procedure. Equipment is checked daily and between cases, drugs are prepared, and controlled substances are accounted for according to department guidelines. The role also includes precepting student nurse anesthetists, maintaining equipment and supplies, and communicating with surgeons and anesthesiologists about patient concerns.

The position requires adherence to the organization's policies, accreditation standards, state and federal law, and regional and departmental requirements, along with courteous work relationships with patients, staff and the public. Other duties within the scope of the CRNA's license and certification may be assigned as needed.
