Anesthesia care team

Full details

The role centers on selecting and giving intravenous, spinal, and other anesthetics before and during surgical or medical procedures, working as part of the anesthesia care team under the employer's policies. The CRNA monitors the patient's responses and vital signs throughout anesthesia and into recovery, takes corrective steps when needed, files a postoperative report on the patient's condition, and keeps accurate records of the anesthetics given.

Responsibilities include reviewing patients before surgery, deliveries, or other procedures, which means examining charts, pre-operative medications, lab results, and any items such as dentures, hearing aids, or prostheses that could affect care. The CRNA assesses possible airway difficulties, documents every pre-anesthesia evaluation to standard, and explains tests, procedures, and major anesthetic risks to patients and their families. The provider consults with anesthesiologists and surgeons as needed.

The CRNA builds each patient's care plan, reviews it with the supervising physician to obtain agreement, and carries out the anesthesia plan, including starting IV fluids and administering the chosen agent. Agent selection must fit patient safety, the surgical need, possible complications, and the patient's history. The role also includes preparing drug solutions at required concentrations, taking part in a safety-focused handoff with recovery staff, and alerting the anesthesiologist or surgeon to significant changes, including performing neonatal resuscitation when necessary.

Certain procedures performed outside the operating room, such as intubation and arterial line placement, are included, provided they fall within established competencies and a physician's order. Procedure details are recorded in progress notes.

This is a 40-hour position. The employer notes that it reviews compensation for its positions regularly and may revise job descriptions or change a position's pay status from salaried to hourly, generally after notifying affected employees.
