Full details

The UAB Division of Community Anesthesia pairs anesthesiologists and CRNAs to provide services at UAB St. Vincent's facilities in Birmingham, near downtown. CRNAs in the division work with considerable autonomy and a collegial relationship with anesthesiologists and surgeons. The division covers a wide range of surgical areas, including a busy sports medicine orthopaedic practice, obstetrics, cardiac, neuro, vascular, and general surgery. The team of 15 anesthesiologists and more than 70 CRNAs handles more than 50,000 procedures a year across 53 operating rooms and surgical suites, giving new graduates and experienced nurse anesthetists many chances to build skill in any area of anesthesia.

The schedule is irregular and as-needed, and the role carries no on-call, weekend, or holiday shift requirements. The CRNA provides anesthesia under the direction of an anesthesiologist for varied surgical procedures and diagnostic tests, following the policies and procedures of the Department of Anesthesiology. The position also includes clinical teaching of nurse anesthesia students.

Candidates must hold a degree from an accredited nurse anesthesia program, as work experience cannot replace this requirement. They must be certified as an Advanced Practice Nurse with the CRNA specialty by the Alabama Board of Nursing, and hold current ACLS, BLS through the American Heart Association, and PALS through the American Heart Association.

UAB Medicine is Alabama's largest health system, with more than 1.2 million patients a year and a network of hospitals, emergency departments, and clinics. UAB Hospital, the flagship, is an academic center, and the system also includes five UAB St. Vincent's hospitals serving central Alabama. Employees can choose from academic, community, and outpatient settings, and the organization offers comprehensive benefit packages.
